Itinerary
Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve
Your first stop on this Basque tour will be in the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve. This area is a natural estuary sheltered by a beautiful green mountain landscape, with the Oka River running through the center leading to the Bay of Biscay. This is one of our most treasured natural environments in the Basque Country. If you have any interest in birds, there is a world-renowned bird center located within the reserve that we can absolutely make a stop at. Just let us know!
Laida and Laga
We then head to Laida Beach, where the Oka River empties into the ocean. This is a dramatic landscape with a picturesque Basque pintxo bar overlooking the Urdaibai estuary. For food lovers, this cafe offers some of the best pintxos in the Basque Country with views to match! From Laida we make the short trip along the windy roads of the coast to the cliffs of Ogoño and the beach of Laga. (This is Irene’s and Zachary’s favorite beach in all of the Basque Country).
Quaint Village of Elantxobe
The picturesque seaside town of Elantxobe is our next stop. This unique town looks as if it was built directly into a cliff wall. Also one of Irene´s and Zachary´s favorite places in the Basque Country!
Lekeitio
For our final stop we will venture to Lekeitio; an authentic Basque fishing village situated at the base of green pastoral mountain slopes. Here we find a town that still has an active fishing fleet as they have had for more than 500 years. Not many people visiting the Basque Country get to see this town, and we guarantee it will be on the highlights of the tour. We will take our on a walking tour of the old town and the historic port pointing out sites of interest, and some unique stories. On the way back we will take you the scenic route through the Basque mountains and small towns that dot the countryside.
