Gernika

Our first stop on this private tour will be in the historic town of Gernika. This city holds immense political importance for the Basque people. Local politicians have made important national decisions here for nearly 1000 years.The city has historical significance as the sight of a horrific aerial bombing in 1937. This day in history was the inspiration for Pablo Picasso’s famous Guernica painting that portrays this infamous day. Additionally, we will also visit the Tree of Gernika, where the Basque democracy originates and still has tremendous importance to this day. The provincial government of Bizkaia has their parliament building here as well.

Mundaka

Our next stop is the quaint village of Mundaka right at the mouth the scenic Oka River overlooking Bay of Biscay. From Mundaka, you will be afforded amazing views of the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This estuary is one of the most naturally beautiful sites in the entire Basque Country. The small fishing port is also home to a world-class surf break known the world over amongst surfers.

Bermeo

Bermeo, with its beautiful multi-colored buildings, is just a short drive west of Mundaka. The old town is lined with centuries old multi-colored houses that make for a unique photo opportunity. This town also has an active fishing fleet, and was once an important whaling port for the Basques.

San Juan de Gaztelugatxe

Our next stop on the Basque coast is at the 10th-century hermitage of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, which is an incredible feat of structural engineering. This small church sits at the pinnacle of a small island connected to the coast only via a small stone bridge. Gaztelugatze was also predominately featured in season 7 of the acclaimed television show Game of Thrones. There are many sites in Basque Country where the series was filmed. We will also stop in the nearby town of Bakio for nice local lunch or pintxos if you prefer. On the way back to your hotel we will take you along the scenic route through the Basque mountains and small towns that dot the countryside.

Spent a great evening enjoying a fantastic selection of pintxos and drinks chosen by Lei, our very enthusiastic and knowledgeable guide. The venues were all nice and reasonably varied. I would never have known to order most of the pintxos which Lei selected and it was great to try such different options. We left nicely full and very happy with our tour selection. Tour guide Leire (she said we could call her Lei), was super friendly, informative, engaging and helpful. There were 10 people on our English-speaking tour from a variety of countries, and it was fun to get to know everyone. The pintxos and wines were delicious, and it felt like we had the perfect amount of both. I felt pleasantly full at the end and not too intoxicated (which I was afraid of after having wine at every stop lol). Lei was also very accommodating of food allergies and preferences that myself and other members had. Great tour and tour guide. Highly recommend!

Rioja Valley winery tour from Bilbao: We (group of three couples) had an absolutely fantastic day with Zach as our driver and amazingly knowledgeable tour guide. Zach took us from the Getxo cruise port to visit wineries in Rioja Valley and back to our ship in plenty of time. Communication for scheduling and questions prior to the tour date was always timely and helpful. The wineries we visited were beautiful and our entire day was very personalized and enjoyable. Wonderful! Zach showed up on time, which already felt like a small miracle. He knew a lot but did not act like a know-it-all. He smiled. He waited for us, which mattered, as our group moved like a geriatric ward The van was brilliantly clean. No odd smells. Seats soft enough that no one complained, which says a lot. The walk to San Juan de Gaztelugatxe felt like a scene from a film, but with more stairs and less grace on my part. Worth every step. Then the wine. Good wine. First night in Bilbao and a great food tour with Irene. Explored the old town via 5 pinxtos bars with fabulous food and wine selections.
