Basque Cider House Experience

Tour Description

We will visit an 500 year old Basque cider house for a short tour and traditional lunch. Visiting a Basque Cider House will give you the opportunity to discover a cozy environment where locals meet to enjoy some of the most traditional dishes of the Basque Country, paired with natural Basque apple cider directly from the oak barrels! We will also visit Hondarribia, which is considered to be one of the most beautiful towns in the entire Basque Country!

Itinerary

Hondarribia

Hondarribia has so many historic sites that makes this medieval fishing village a must-see for any visitor to the region. This quaint village is located directly on the Bidasoa River separating the country from France. In the old part of the town we will enjoy its stone-paved streets and the walls surrounding it, its houses with coats of arms and emblematic buildings such as the Castle of the Emperor Carlos V. We will also visit the old fishing port which has the colourful houses, restaurants, and pintxo bars. Bidasoa River and into France.

Basque Cider House

After Hondarribia, we will make our way into the Basque foothills to a traditional Basque cider house where we will go for a tour of the facilities. The family has been producing cider for over 500 years! After the tour we will have delicious family-style lunch of cod, peppers, steak, cheese, nuts, fresh bread and all you can drink cider from the massive oak barrels!

Apple Cider

Dry, tart, and barely carbonated, this fermented apple cider has a history that dates to pre-Roman times. It’s a staple among the Basques, who are a unique ethnic group living within an autonomous community in northern Spain. Basque cider is best enjoyed at a sagardotegi—cider house—where a traditional menu of cod, steak, omelette, fresh bread, nuts, cheese and fresh jam pairs with all-you-can-drink cider poured straight from massive oak barrels.
