We have sure been enjoying the recent summer conditions here in the Basque Country. It has been in the 70s for more than a week here in Bilbao! The best of Basque recently gave a private guided tour of the coast on one of these unusually warm days. Julian and Christina from Arizona were interested in seeing the Basque txakoli vineyards of Bakio, and the other beautiful sights of the coast of Bizkaia. Our first stop was at a family-run txakoli vineyard in Bakio where we enjoyed a wine tasting and pintxos. The sun was out, showcasing the vibrant blue of the Bay of Biscay, and the dark green coastal mountains. We even saw quite a few people enjoying the sun lying on the beach of Bakio (amazing for November)!
We then took a driving tour along the coast towards Mundaka and Urdaibai, passing the infamous hermitage of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe. Gaztelugatxe is famous hermitage on a rocky island just off the coast, dating back to the 10th century. The island is connected to the mainland by a narrow isthmus comprised of ancient stairs made of stone!
Our final stop was for a 3 course Basque lunch near the famous port city of Mundaka. For our guests this was the highlight of their private Basque tour, as the food was absolutely outstanding (in their words)! Our guests really enjoyed their tour of the Basque coast, and we hope to see them again!
